Process

Concept & Beginning Stages

Mau sent me some photos of him and his bandmates to use for the cover. I drew them out on paper which i then transferred over to Procreate. I shifted them around to find try to find the best spots for them. There was a lot of division and strife between the police and black people due to the horrific and tragic death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Protests were going on in retribution for black people and the Black Lives Matter movement. Because of this, I drew police on the left and protestors on the right, with police cars in the background.

I began the painting process and attempted to find some gritty textures online in order to be able to create some texture in the work. I used a few different blend modes for various areas to bring out some subjects and to create a glow around the police car lights. I believe I have used “multiply” and “overlay” and adjusted the opacity.

If I were to change anything

If I were to change anything, it would probably be the composition of the band members, having the guitar behind Mau’s arm, and the two people on the right would probably be closer towards the middle.

I would have probably fixed up the details of the cop cars, and if i had the time I would have probably made the character’s in front of the band more detailed. At the same time, I think the different styles between them creates more contrast, so it could be the case that I’d just leave it as it is.
